Respect of Boundaries: Although Pi faces many other challenges, he is constantly brought back to creating his territory with Richard Parker. Richard Parker is very respectful of territory, since he is an animal, and Pi creating his own domain was a crucial part of his survival. To tame Richard Parker, Pi had to take control of certain areas of the lifeboat. He poured his urine on the tarpaulin to signal Richard Parker that it was his own area, and he used the whistle to make sure that Richard Parker stays in his own space. This ensured he could live peacefully with the tiger while none of them crossed their boundaries.
