The will to live: This novel is mainly about the struggle to survive against almost impossible odds. All of the animals that are on the lifeboat do not accept their fate and die, they fight and try to live. The orangutan, which was normally a peaceful creature, gets into a violent fight with the hyena, and Pi deserts his vegetarianism and eats meat, all for the sake of survival. These are examples of what animals will do to ensure their survival, although it may seem cruel or barbaric.
The value of storytelling: The entire novel is a story, but Pi also creates his own story about what happened to him on the lifeboat. He creates animals to represent people to keep himself from facing what actually happened... that many savage decisions were made in an attempt to survive by everyone around him, and by creating the animals, he was able to put the blame on animals rather than to face the fact that it was humans who did these gruesome things.
